Telling Indigenous Women’s Stories – Why the Coverage Needs to Go Further

"This isn’t another poor Indian story, is it?”

It’s been over 10 years, but I still remember the shock I felt hearing those words from my producer. It was 2005 and I worked at a national current affairs show, and had just pitched my first story on a missing Indigenous woman. A girl I knew from back home in Saskatchewan had disappeared. Her name was Amber Redman and she was 19. Amber was on a volleyball team that I coached when I was in university. I didn’t know her well, but I remember she was a shy, sweet girl.

Use "Key Words" in your resume!

When preparing a resume, ensure that you do a little research about the company and type of position you are seeking within it. If you have done your homework before sending in a resume, you can use the "key words" that describe exactly what they are searching for.

In addition to using the words that describe the skill sets they are seeking, also try to incorporate words that they might use to do a search on skills.

For example:

If a potential employer were looking for a truck driver, with a particular class of license - use the license type as a "key word".

Or a tradesperson with a particular type of ticket, again use the type as a key word. Again use words that will ultimately give you an advantage over another applicant and bring your name to the top of their list!
